The TV was new, just purchased. I’d never have sprung for so lavish a gift if I hadn’t been so weak. It was a gift for all of us, from all of us, together. This was what I’d told myself: we needed some laughter in the house, we needed something bright, and the newest models on the market were showing color. I picked out a hulking Philco “Miss America” whose blonde pine console was like a pine tree’s stump, which I had the deliverers haul up to Judy’s bedroom before Edith could object or even knew about the purchase.
Joshua Cohen, The Netanyahus, page 120
As usual, if you go looking, the internet delivers. There are some wonderful vintage advertisements for the Miss America posted all over. This was life before high fidelity. The chapter from which the quote comes is amazing. Highly recommend this book.
